Coming on the heels of a successful Special In-Country Program on Champion Leaders Development Program for TVET Skills for Poverty Alleviation last year, the Colombo Plan Staff College (CPSC) and member country Maldives strengthen collaboration for this year’s In-Country Program on Competency-Based Education and Training (CBE&T). The program is being conducted through the cooperation of TVET Authority (TVETA) and Maldives Qualification Authority (MQA), Government of the Republic of Maldives from March 23 to 27, 2014 in Male, Maldives.
In recognizing current need of Maldives to focus on competency based system and gradually replace the traditional system in TVET, CPSC works with its government in taking initiatives to arrange different projects, training programs and workshops for trainers that will form a pool of potential CBE&T developers and practitioners to enhance capacity in implementing and sustaining CBE&T in the country’s TVET systems.
The CPSC Director General, Dr. Mohammad Naim Yaakub, addressed 27 participants of the program and acknowledged the presence of respected officials of the collaborating organizations during the opening ceremonies held March 24, Monday. He said that the show of support of high officials from the Ministry of Education of Maldives and co-organizing agencies “gives CPSC great motivation” in providing a program that had undergone significant preparations in order to impart the best training to TVET professionals of Maldives.
Dr. Naim said that it is with pleasure and pride to note booming businesses in Maldives and wished for its continued progress and development. He further highlighted the mutually beneficial relationship of CPSC and Maldives that keeps on going stronger each time program collaboration is being undertaken. He expressed hopes for another program after the ongoing one, a regional program perhaps in the near future.
Among top officials who graced the inaugural program were: Dr. Abdul Mohsin Mohamad, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Education (MOE), Republic of Maldives;
Ms. Aminath Ashra, Head, TVETA and MQA; Mr. Abdulla Ibrahim, Director MQA; and senior officers from MOE, TVETA, MQA and Maldives Polytechnic.
At the end of the program the participants are expected to be able to:
- identify the emerging trends, issues and challenges in the prevailing environment for TVET system in relation to competency-based education and training;
- understand the competency-based education and training and assessment system vis-à-vis its importance in the competency development of craftsmen/technicians;
- apply DACUM approach to competency-based education and training;
- identify tools and processes in analyzing and assessing the competencies attained during the vocational education and training; and
- develop a competency-based training package for a selected occupations in industries and/or services.
Dr. Naim supervises the overall implementation of the program as Program Supervisor, while Dr. Hazrat Hussain, CPSC Faculty Consultant, handles program coordination as Program Coordinator and Resource Person.
