The Republic of Maldives celebrates its 47th independence day on July 26 2012, in commemoration with the emancipation from British colonial rule on July 26, 1965.
The island was invaded by superpowers and pirates on its long history. For 15 long years, the island was under the capture of Portuguese. In 1887, the island was invaded by British and ruled for many years until it became its protectorate after the World War II. After several years leading to 1965, Maldives became an independent nation.
The agreement giving the Maldives full political independence was signed on behalf of His Majesty the Sultan by Ibrahim Nasir Rannabandeyri Kilegefan, Prime Minister; and on behalf of Her Majesty the Queen by Sir Michael Walker, British Ambassador designate to the Maldive Islands. The Ceremony took place at the British High Commissioner’s Residence in Colombo on 26 July 1965. After independence from Britain in 1965, the sultanate continued to operate for another three years under King Muhammad Fareed Didi.
Maldives Independence Day Traditions and Activities
July 26 is the most important date for the people of Maldives and commemorated in a grand way. The Republic Square in Male traditionally hosts the celebration and is followed with processions and performances which is a mixture of both traditional values and modern theme.The event kicks off with a historical march which is organized by the national Cadet Corps and the National Security Service.This is followed by modern drills, traditional dance and drills performed by the children and youth of different schools and colleges. It wraps up with entertaining and fun loving night out and street parties. Presidents and all the foreign dignitaries are also expected toattend this grand event.
The Colombo Plan Staff College wishes to congratulate the Government of the Republic of Maldives and joins its Maldivian brothers and sisters in celebration of this joyous occasion.
